Common questions
Getting started
What comes in the kit?
Every kit includes a fully colonized, ready-to-fruit mushroom block, a reusable growing tray, a humidity dome (your mini greenhouse), a spray bottle, and printed growing instructions. All you add is water.
What temperature and light do the kits need?
Both varieties fruit well at normal room temperature (55–75°F). They need indirect ambient light — a kitchen counter near a window or under a cabinet light is perfect. Avoid direct sunlight and heat vents.
Why do the two kits start differently?
Shiitake needs a cold-water shock to trigger fruiting, so you soak the block for 8–12 hours before setting it up. Lion's Mane fruits from a cut in the bag and doesn't need the initial soak. The instruction card in each kit spells out the exact steps for your variety.
How long until I see mushrooms?
Shiitake usually pins within 3–10 days of the cold-water soak. Lion's Mane typically pins in 7–20 days after you cut the bag. From pinning to harvest is another 3–10 days depending on variety and room temperature.
Harvest, shipping, and after
How many harvests can I expect from one kit?
Most kits produce 2–3 flushes over 4–8 weeks. After each harvest, let the block rest for a few days, then soak it in cold water for several hours to rehydrate it and return it to the tray. Each successive flush is usually a little smaller than the last.
Are these kits Non-GMO?
Yes. Every block is Non-GMO and grown from our own cultures on clean hardwood-based substrate in our Woodville, Ohio lab. Kits are made to order, never pulled from long-term storage.
Do you ship the kits?
Yes, we ship within the continental US and pack each kit to protect the block in transit. Local customers in the Woodville, OH area can also pick up at our facility at 512 Lime Street.
What do I do with the block when it's finished?
Compost it or break it up into your garden beds — spent blocks are excellent soil amendment, and outdoor blocks occasionally throw one more surprise flush.
