MOREL

SPAWN

GROW GUIDE

STEP ONE: FIND THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT

Morchella rufobrunnea, The Landscape Morel

Also called the blushing morel, M. rufobrunnea is a unique species of morel that naturally grows in disturbed soils, garden beds, and landscaped areas—not deep forests like other morels. It's one of the few morels known to fruit in urban settings, often popping up in mulch, compost piles, or along sidewalks after rain and cool weather.

This makes it a perfect choice for growing right in your own yard or garden bed.

The first step of growing your morels is finding the right spot:
Look for a place with loose soil and partial shade, like under a tree, beside a bush, or along a garden bed. M. rufobrunnea naturally thrives in disturbed or landscaped areas, especially spots with wood chips, compost, or mulch. Avoid soggy ground—morels like it moist but well-drained.

STEP TWO: SPREAD YOUR SPAWN

Cut open the spawn bag and crumble the contents evenly over about 5x5’ area of soil. Make sure the spawn touches bare soil—this helps it colonize the area. Then, cover lightly with 1–2 inches of mulch, wood chips, or leaf litter to protect it and hold in moisture.

In some larger trials, folks create a mini shaded hoop house to keep in moisture and reduce light, but this isn’t necassary if you find a naturally shaded area.

STEP THREE: WATER AND WAIT

Keep the area consistently moist, especially during dry spells. One or two good soakings per week is usually enough. Then just be patient—morels take time. If conditions are right, you might see mushrooms in a month or 2, especially after a cool rain.
